After all the euphoria of the past few days, I had almost forgotten how terrible this season has been. It started off generally well in the first three matchdays, with 4 points out of 9. But then, we had to deal with four hammer blows in a row: the ridiculous loss against Madrid, the loss at Balaidos, the last-minute loss against Almeria, and then the humiliation in Sevilla.

We came back with a great 3-0 victory over Valencia after the international break, which had us all believing things would finally get better. But in the next 5 games, we hopelessly lost two more games, and we had three draws (2 of them very lucky). A very narrow victory over a poor Elche was followed by another humiliation, this time at Villarreal, and then we reached the winter break.

We started the new year with a decent 4 points out of 9, beating Athletic, drawing Levante and getting beat badly by Barça. After that, we gave away a 2-1 victory against Granada, mainly thanks to Victor Fernandez' stupidity. I actually mentioned after that game, that this was the moment that would cause our relegation. Fortunately I was wrong, but I came pretty close with that prediction. At that moment, I had completely given up on VF and couldn't stand him anymore.

Surprisingly though, we managed to get two consecutive wins after that: a lucky victory at Rayo, and an easy victory against a terrible Eibar. We lost 2-0 at Real Madrid leaving good sensations, and once again we thought we were finally on track for a tranquil end to the season, even having reached 11th place somehow after the Eibar victory. How wrong we were...

Pretty much the worst run in Depor's history began with the loss at the Bernabéu. We lost the derby at home to Celta, and after that, it was one disgraceful game after the other. Several games later, Victor Fernandez was finally sacked after one of the worst teams in Primera's history could have beaten us senseless at the Riazor, but instead they headed a corner into their own goal in the final minute to give us a (vital) point.

Fernandez was sacked with 8 games to go, and this turned out to be the turning point of the season. Sure, the new coach didn't exactly bring better results with him. But having rewatched some of the highlights of the last games with VF, I realised just how much more of a team we became as soon as the new Victor took over. Aside from one game, we were always competing, and we never gave up. Compared to the absolutely broken team we saw against Getafe, Cordoba and so on... The difference is huge. Much bigger than I realised.

With Victor, we managed to get surprising draws at Malaga and Sociedad, with an expected loss against Atletico in between. Strangely enough, this was followed by what was probably our worst game of the season (even worse than the Real Madrid game). In retrospect, I still don't have an explanation for what went so horribly wrong in that game. At least it managed to serve as a wake-up call for the players. We were all saying at that point that we needed two more wins to stay up, six more points. In the end, we were all right, as six points was exactly what we needed. We were hoping to beat Levante, and get a win against either Villarreal or Athletic. The final game against Barcelona was useless, as we wouldn't stand any chance at the Camp Nou.

In the end we fought our way to two draws against Villarreal and Athletic, followed by an easy victory over Levante. And then the miracle happened.

Looking back at this whole thing, we can't say it was a season of ups and downs. We were down all season long, except at both the beginning of the first and second round, when we were... ok. But we ended up fighting our way to the permanence in the last 8 games of the season, and the way we did it at the end, after all this misery, will leave everyone with a good feeling.

Now we just need to get some good new players, keep the most important players of this season, and I'm certain we could finally have a good ol' boring season coming our way. Elche seems doomed since they can't do any transfers, Getafe will certainly have a much tougher year because of their financial troubles, and teams like Granada, Levante and Rayo could suffer as well. Then of course we have three newcomers from Segunda. I can't see Betis fighting against relegation, but the other two will certainly have a lot of trouble. I'm kinda hoping Girona will get promoted, as they could be the new Cordoba next season.

That was a painful watch. A lot of very below average performances throughout and to be honest we probably played at a better standard during the two relegation seasons. The fight and desire showed under Victor though should see us progress in the next campaign.

I haven't had the opportunity to watch any of the last few matches of the season... I'm glad Depor managed to stay up this time... But I'm sick of these last match do or die situations... Here's hoping for a better season this year.

Remember when we were complaining of the boring end-of-season games, when we had nothing to play for anymore?

Those were the days

Seriously though, we had 5 seasons in a row now where we had to fight to reach our goal until the final matchday, or the penultimate matchday. At least in the end we succeeded three out of five times. And fighting against relegation or for promotion, is MUCH more stressful than fighting to reach Europe. If you fail to reach the 6th place, well... Who cares really? Aside from a little disappointment, you're quickly left with the feeling of "no harm done, better luck next year." I didn't realise that 5 years ago. I do now.

I honestly hope we can finish the first round of next season without about 25 points in the bag, and then cruise towards the end of the season without having to worry for once, watching the relegation dogfight from a comfortable distance.

This season, with Eibar and Cordoba at top flight was supposed to be easy, and indeed it was (no matter Eibar made an impressive start). Next season will be more tough. 3 small teams have gone down, and so far a big gun (Betis) returns.
Maybe Girona could be next season's Cordoba (if they manage to promote) but no other underdog is at promotion fight.

I also think Girona could be the new Cordoba, so I'm kinda hoping they manage to pull of the promotion. And as I mentioned earlier, I can't see Betis fighting against the permanence either. I'm thinking their first season back in the top flight will mirror what happened with Villarreal a few years ago.

I don't know if things will be harder than this year though. If Girona gets promoted, then they are the clear favorites to get relegated again alongside Elche. That would just leave one spot. Getafe will have serious problems as well next year, and the third team to get promoted from Segunda will suffer as well.

We'll see. I just hope Tino and Vidal learned from last year's mistakes in the transfer window. If they manage to get most of the squad together by the time the pre-season starts, I'm confident we could run away from our competitors early on in the season, and never look back.

I just read the team stats and what we've done its something worst than even a nightmare but somehow we're still in Primera even just with 35 points. It was about to happen 3 out of 3 recently promoted clubs to go down again, which tells us something - the level in Segunda is really really poor. Right now I don't hope for anything it was enough for me what happaned this 4-5 years. Let's see what we gonna get from the market and then make some predictions.
