He has the potential to be a very good player for us. However, I'm concerned that we've invested too much time and money to strengthen a position that was already quite strong. Ferguson's long term admiration of van Persie is the real reason behind the deal.

The midfield concerns me. I fear that we'll have another season of Giggs, Scholes and Carrick trying to fill the gap left by the disappointing (Anderson) and the injured (Cleverley). Unless he's willing to play Kagawa in the middle, the van Persie transfer will just look negligent. I'm seriously sick of us getting dominated by rivals because we're content to go 4-5-1 and pack the midfield with veterans.

He wants to win trophies. The timing is slightly odd, because Arsenal have invested heavily this summer to push for honours. On the other hand, if that's sufficient enough to challenge City is debatable. They might not hit the ground running in their first season. van Persie isn't somebody who has time on his side to see if they can fulfil their promise.

For what it's worth, I've been a big fan of van Persie for many years. His class was obvious to see long before last season. He was never shy of causing problems against us. Fergie is said to think the same. I never imagined that he'd one day be signing for us.

I share the concerns about MU's midfield. That will be their Achilles heel this season. I'm not sure we'll see Kagawa play as a deep-lying midfielder - that's not his forte. Rooney will fill the playmaking role just off RVP. Kagawa may have to slot into a wide position on the left. Young on the right with Cleverly and Scholes/Giggs in the holding roles.

Looking forward to seeing what sort of an influence Brendan Rogers will have at Liverpool. Very underwhelmed with his signings so far and a bit disappointed we haven't thrown out more of the deadwood. Anyway, it's a fresh start and good luck to him.

I don't expect to see Kagawa playing deep. I simply don't want him hugging the touchline and whipping the ball in whenever he gets a chance. I'd rather he played a more advanced central role or drifted in from the left, linking up with Rooney and RvP. As much as I like seeing Valencia torment full-backs, we became a bit too reliant on the flanks last season.

What a way to start for Michu. Two goals and an assist and Swansea trashes QPR 0-5

Cazorla looked extremely dangerous, too, even though it was his first match. Can't say the same for Podolski and Giroud.

MU's midfield and attack was completely disjointed and unbalanced as we spoke about above. It seemed to me that Scholes was a holding player, with Cleverly and Kagawa in front of him and Rooney floating everywhere and nowhere in particular.
